Hines was born on July 20, 1953, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Eugene is her father’s name, while Esmeralda Hines is her mother’s. Hines’ father died at the age of six months as a result of surgery to remove shrapnel from a battle wound. She was reared by her mother and elder brother, Dwight, and began singing in her church choir at the age of nine. In her teens, she performed with local ensembles and temporarily went by the stage name Shanti Renee. Hines was 14 years old when she received a scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music, but she departed after three months. A month after turning 16, Hines went to the Woodstock Festival.
