Career

Bernie’s songwriting career officially began by coincidence in the late 1960s. Elton John was a talent manager at a large record business looking to employ a songwriter. Since then, Bernie has written many of Elton’s songs, collaborating on thirty albums over nearly four decades. Their collaboration flourished in the early 1980s, when Bernie produced Elton John’s ‘The Fox,’ ’21 At 33,’ and ‘Jump Up!’ Like creating albums. The two had collaborated on occasion in the 1970s, but the success of the aforementioned records cemented their relationship. Some of the best songs Bernie composed for John are ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Crocodile Rock’, ‘The Bitch is Back’, ‘Daniel’, ‘Sad Songs’, ‘Nikita’, ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’, and ‘Your Song’. In 1991, an interesting documentary titled ‘Two Rooms’ was released, which detailed both artists’ working processes. However, as their collaboration progressed, the work process became increasingly collaborative. In March 2006, John and Bernie expanded their cooperation by beginning work on a Broadway musical called ‘Lestat: The Musical’. In the early 1970s, he co-produced and penned songs for musician David Ackles’ album ‘American Gothic’. Bernie formed Farm Dogs in the mid-1990s and released two albums, ‘Last Stand in Open Country’ and ‘Immigrant Sons’. In 1973, Bernie compiled nearly all of the songs he wrote for John into a poetry book named ‘Bernie Taupin: The One Who Writes the Words for Elton John’. In the 1990s, Bernie also published a poetry collection called ‘The Devil at High Noon’.
